2/13: Art and Letters Inspired by All Sorts of Stuff. And Betty Draper.

I’m not sure why, but I’ve always been fascinated by Middle Eastern culture. So I loved this piece on Iran’s modern art from the 1950s-70s. A whole slew of artists, all with strikingly different approaches, are profiled in the essay, with info on where to see the works in person around NYC.

This small detail is from a mirror/mosaic work by Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian. Please make the jump above to see the entire work as well as many others.

ArtNews is such a great resource, turning me onto Jane Hammond with a great article on her unorthodox and highly personal work. Wow! Go visit her.

Mad Men’s next season is six weeks away. So while we’re waiting, let’s look at some pictures of Betty with excellent captions over at buzzfeed.

And if you need some good readin’, this list of linked essays over at Flavorwire should keep you pretty occupied. Featuring Joan Didion, Jamaica Kincaid, and of course Virginia Woolf, plus a whole lot of lesser known writers who shouldn’t be.
